Honorable Mention

Title: A device to enable visually-disabled people to read a printed text

Comcept: Loss of sight and hearing restricts an access to information. This leads to inability to learn, work, communicate, life in a society. The device should provide these people with an access to daily information. The project combines functions of the following devices: an electronic braille display, a hand held scanner, a translator to Braille, a notebook, a voice synthesizer, a Dictaphone and a calculator. The combination of these functions creates a machine which makes a blind person able to read a printed text single handedly, even from different kinds of sources, e.g. books, newspapers etc., as well as, to make notes using Braille. The device should also be compatible with PC to enable the visually handicapped to interactively work and play. Minimal dimensions, protective cover as well as an ergonomic shape of these appliances, make it possible to carry them easily and safely and use them whenever and wherever there is a need.

Coment: This design combines the various functions the visually impaired use daily to obtain information ミ scanner, electronic Braille display, Braille translator - all in a compact portable device. On the technical front, several aspects still need further review, such as the method of accurately scanning printed materials. Although at this point, a visually impaired individual would not be able to control the device without help, the development of any device that helps the visually impaired communicate better with society is always gratefully welcomed.
