Symposium:
WISDOM of NATURE
Design and Architecture from Austria

"To us, design means the articulation of people's desires and fears, drawing its strength from the collective subconscious of mankind. In this sense, design is a cultural service to society. Design is a poetic discipline that is indispensable for the definition of man in the Universe. Concepts such as ritual, culture and poetry are at the centre of our work."

Harald Grundl

Martin Bergmann (*1963 Lienz), Gernot Bohmann (*1968 Krieglach)and Harald Gru¨ndl (*1967 Vienna) studied design together at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna from 1988 to 1994. In 1990 started their first collaboration and 1995 founded EOOS. EOOS live in Vienna and work in the fields of furniture/product design and flagship store/brand zone design. EOOS is one of the four winged horses of Aurora in Greek mythology. The name stands for our programmatic approach to design. We create ideas and products for a world in which ancient rituals and instincts contrast with new technologies and a dramatically transformed environment.

"Contemporary architecture in Austria is developing in the controversial area of nature, the countryside and the great historical heritage of this small country. The latter call for contradiction and new interpretations. These, in turn, are provoking singular and playful spatial creations that are bringing nature and history together as new experiential worlds."

"We, mankind, had endowed places, which have a speci topography or a strange character, with a special meaning. For example, a pointed peak, a long cascade, a profound fountain, a beautiful shape of hill, a huge tree, or a cave of labyrinth. Where our ancestor found a model of the world they lived in. That was an action of building a microcosm, or of enveloping the universe. Housing the world and representing the cosmos."

"Man is a part of nature and its wisdom. This can be applied to architecture, where, after the destruction − a site is prepared− and something new emerges. This transformation from the destructive and constructive is a daily feature in nature, in architecture it is a question of wisdom of the people handling the subject, the scrupulousness of the thought and plan and the respect for the ambiance found, as to whether the constructive predominates. Lastly, the somewhat overused term lasting is closely related with the architectural quality, buildings should not only be economically and functionally resistant but should also most of all be socially and esthetically tenable. As one would like to preserve for the future only something that one likes."

"The task of building a community centre for an institution that is dedicated to a new way of working the land, namely permaculture, was seen as a challenge for a group of architecture students at the University of Applied Arts Vienna (studio Prof. Wolf D.Prix). Bamboo, a material, that would be recognized by the local population was used and at the same time served an experiment in generating a complex roof structure."
