On Sun., July 16 2023, the “WDO World Design Assembly Tokyo 2023 Related Symposium “The 1973/1989 ICSID Congress and Design Year Legacy”” will be held at the Tokyo Midtown Design Hub.

This symposium examines the roles that the past two World Design Conferences “ICSID Congress” held in Japan in 1973 (Kyoto) and 1989 (Nagoya) and the “Design Year Movement”, which was developed around them, have played in the development of Japanese design. Looking back on the 1973 Congress, listening to the opinions of the designers and government officials who were in charge of the 1989 Design Conference and Design Year enlightenment activities, it examines the significance of the two ICSID Conferences and their Design Years from various angles, and introducing the overview of WDO World Design Assembly Tokyo 2023.
We are now at a crossroads where we have to rebuild design in a world that is different from what we have seen so far, after going through the COVID-19 pandemic and various other changes. Through the World Design Conferences of 1973 and 1989, which turned out to be turning points for the world, and the future that the designers aimed for in those congresses, it will consider the past and future of Japanese design.
The International Design Center NAGOYA Inc. participates as a panelist and introduces the 1989 Congress and its succession as a local government.
