Title of work Happy Naming
Concept of the work Children possess infinite possibilities. When born, children are like a blank canvas that is waiting to be painted. The name which is given to child serves as that child's first signpost in life. Parents spend much time considering the perfect name for their child and bestow a name which embodies their hopes. The document used when naming a child is known as a birth certificate. However, even though the birth of a child is a joyous occasion, birth certificates use a formal and unappealing format. I believe that birth certificates have the potential to provide people with more happiness. Based on this belief, I have designed a birth certificate from the perspective of "bestowing a happy name". The design incorporates the happiness of the new parents and the happiness of the named child. Specifically, the design considers (1) the length of time from when the child was born until a name was decided, and (2) the actions taken to give the child the perfect name. From these two ideas, I derived the keyword of "calendar & origin" as a concept for my design. This proposal focuses on the future of children as embodied by bestowing a happy and perfect name.
Judge's Comment As pointed out by the designer, current birth certificates are formal and unappealing. It is an interesting idea to incorporate attractive design into public documentation. Since the work proposes a theme of "the future of children", the designer's choice of a bright and happy image should be praised. It would be good if this kind of idea was incorporated into the mother-child health handbooks which are issued in Japan.
