TitleF | Food Book | |
Concept: | Food Book is a concept for a series of books that uses the power of smell to communicate the taste of foods. The books represent different cuisines, from Afghani to Zimbabwean. Each book acts like a menu for a certain cuisine. The foods are represented by odor swatches that are embedded with the microencapsulated scents of the foods. To 'eat' a food, users need only tear out the respective swatch, peel away the protective layer to release the aroma, and smell. Since 75 percent of taste comes from smell, users can literally taste the food without having to put anything into their mouths. Food Book is a dining experience, but also provides food for the imagination. Smells have the ability to trigger memories, emotions, and images. One swatch might take a person back to his childhood while the same swatch might transport another person all the way to the country of the food. |

Judge's Comments: | This approach of looking at food in terms of cultural anthropology is very interesting. The work and its presentation are refined and witty. While not prompting us to actually eat, it does expand our imagination about the act of eating. It is a piece that presses the importance of imagination and transcending our existing level of knowledge. However, when one tries to form an image of just who would use this book, and when and how they'd use it, one senses a gap between the idea and the execution. | |
